Frozen shoulder has a biography, and it runs in three stages.
Stage one — pain, about one to three months
A constant pain that deepens daily and radiates to the neck, the upper arm, the shoulder blade. Lighter by day, heavier at night; patients wake with it, and ease after moving a little in the morning. Abduction, backward reach and outward rotation are restricted first.
Stage two — stiffness, about two to six months
The pain recedes and the range goes with it — up to half of it. In severe cases the joint is nearly frozen and other joints compensate; muscle wasting may follow.
Stage three — release, about three to six months
Pain largely gone; outward rotation returns first, then lifting, then inward rotation.
Underneath
Tissue degeneration — liver and kidney declining, qi and blood thinning, sinews under-nourished. Wind-cold-damp invading after sweat, damp dwellings, exposure. Injury and chronic strain. Or secondary causes: cervical disease, fracture, hemiplegia. And the presentations sort three ways — excess-leaning, deficiency-leaning, or phlegm and stasis congealed — each with its own order of treatment.
One rule we keep strictly: adhesions are never torn open by force.
Sudden weakness after trauma, fever, or pain that wakes you nightly without easing — imaging and specialist review first.
