Jaw pain is rarely only about the jaw.
The temporomandibular joint sits before the ear — the hinge everything hangs on. Its disorder: clicking and crepitus on opening, an opening that narrows or locks, aching on chewing. Shoulder aches and migraine often travel with it. In severe cases the disc displaces, the teeth no longer meet, and eating, speech, facial shape and mood are all affected. Women more than men; the slender and fair-skinned are more prone.
Three roads lead in
Tension — the anxious, the quick to anger, long pressure, grinding at night, shallow sleep.
Posture — years of poor head-and-neck position, until the C3–C5 facets slip; those segments connect to cheek, neck, shoulder and the sympathetic chain.
Impact and habit — a blow to the jaw, the mouth held open too long, hard food too often.
Our reading: liver constraint with sinew stagnation
The liver governs the sinews; when liver qi does not flow, a person braces; when liver blood does not nourish, the neck sinews tighten and the jaw stops opening freely. So assessment asks about sleep and pressure, not only about the jaw — and treatment releases first, needles second.
A locking jaw, or an opening that keeps narrowing, goes to dental assessment first. Acupuncture does not replace a splint or dental care.
